Introduction to Creative Writing

Introduction to the writing of fiction, poetry, and drama. Development of the basic skills used to create imaginative literature. Fundamentals of craft and composition; the distinct but related techniques used in the three genres. Story, scene, and character in fiction; sound, line, image, and voice in poetry; monologue, dialogue, and action in drama.

Creative Nonfiction Writing
In Person | Session B | Tara McKelvey
This experiential course will teach the craft of writing nonfiction. You will learn how to write features, essays, and profiles. You will develop skills in critical thinking, and through close readings of reportage you will acquire a deeper understanding of narrative structure. This class will show you how to see the world as a writer. It is an exhilarating experience, and it will make your world bigger. This comes from being out and about—visiting places, talking to people, and taking notes. By the end of the course, you’ll have a new language for understanding the world, a richer, more literary one, and you’ll know how to tell stories with verve and confidence.
